Employee resource groups are groups of people that come together because of shared experiences or characteristics, such as background, gender, or sexual orientation. They can be both formal (having structure and authority) and informal, and can be formed within an organization or, conversely, bring together individuals who belong to separate organizations in different industries. The first such teams were formed at Xerox Corporation in the late 1960s, in response to racial tensions related to discrimination against black people, which was significant at the time. As the business environment and society changed, ERGs expanded to include other groups of people.

Today, the formation of ERGs is necessary because there is still a need to promote diversity and equality in many countries and organizations. Employee resource groups work primarily to ensure that all employees, regardless of their differences, have equal opportunities and are treated fairly. They also support employees’ professional development and help them achieve their career goals. At the same time, they can help employees make valuable connections among people with similar backgrounds, which leads to a greater sense of belonging and support.
However, what benefits does this phenomenon have for organizations? First of all, the diversity of perspectives and innovation that result from the work of ERGs makes organizations more flexible and adaptable to changing market conditions, which is important in a more and more diverse and global business environment.
