There are several strategies that you can use to optimize and develop your digital product. Here are a few methods that you could consider:

  • Perennial improvement – is about making small but regular improvements to the product. For example, a company that develops antivirus software may regularly update its virus definitions to provide protection against the latest threats.
  • Value loops – focus on creating and delivering value to the customer by continuously improving the product. A company developing a language-learning app, for example, might introduce new languages and develop extra features, such as educational games, to boost user engagement.
  • Feedback loops – involve collecting feedback from users and using it to improve the product. For example, a company building a task management app might collect feedback from users on new features they would like to have in the app.

Indeed, both continuous improvement and value loops are key to product optimization. And well-interpreted feedback loops can provide invaluable data needed for product development – for example, moving from a minimum viable product (MVP) to a minimum marketable product (MMP), and developing a minimum marketable feature (MMF).

Product optimization examples

One of the examples of product optimization is the development of a mobile app by Uber. Initially, the app only allowed users to order cabs, but over time it expanded its offer with food delivery (Uber Eats) and car-sharing (UberPool) services. Another example is Spotify, which is constantly optimizing its algorithms to provide users with more and more personalized playlists. Dropbox has also gone through the optimization process, expanding its offer beyond file storage to include collaboration and project management tools.

Stages of the product development process

To develop your product successfully, you need to take a few steps:

  • Identify areas for improvement – for instance, through analyzing customer data and collecting feedback.
  • Set priorities – decide which areas are most important, and focus on them.
  • Experiment – for example, conduct A/B tests to understand what changes will be most effective.
  • Analyze results – use data to find out what changes have brought positive results.
  • Implement changes – introduce and monitor change to evaluate its impact on the product’s performance.

Challenges and opportunities of product optimization

Here are some of the challenges companies may face when optimizing a digital product:

  • Technical constraints – sometimes, the technology your product relies on, may have some limitations.

Despite these challenges, optimizing a digital product offers many opportunities, such as improving customer satisfaction and boosting revenue. For example, by optimizing the purchasing process in an online store, you can increase the number of buyers.
